Inspiration often finds me outdoors, amidst the natural beauty of winding trails, tranquil parks, and the familiar landscapes of my farm. There is something about being surrounded by nature that brings me back to my childhood—those countless hours spent playing in fields, wandering along streams, and resting beneath the protective embrace of towering oak trees. It is here, in these serene spaces, that I feel a profound sense of peace. Time slows, moving as gently as the water that trickles through my favorite streams. It is in these moments that I reflect, converse with God, and listen for His still, small voice. In a world filled with noise and chaos, this connection to His creation is what keeps me grounded and hopeful.
One day, as I searched for a subject to paint, I was captivated by a scene along a familiar stream. The light illuminated the background in a way that seemed almost divine, its reflection shimmering on the water’s surface. Two trees, their limbs intertwined, formed a natural frame, and their reflections created a perfect diamond shape in the water. As I observed closer, I noticed something subtle yet significant—a faint path along the opposite bank, barely visible but undeniably present. However, what drew me in even more were the reflections that seemed to reach toward me, as if calling me back toward that hidden path. There was a quiet but persistent tugging, an unspoken invitation to explore beyond what was immediately visible.
I set the image aside, letting it linger in my mind. Often, I keep a collection of photographs that “speak to me,” patiently waiting for their moment to be transformed into a painting. In the days that followed, I continued my walks along the stream, and each time, the same feelings returned when I reached that spot. Then, one day, as I stood there, the words “Follow Me” came to mind. The phrase settled deep within me, refusing to fade. At first, I wasn’t sure why, but I knew it was important. Titles for my paintings are sometimes elusive, but this one was unmistakable—this painting was meant to be called *Follow Me*.
As a Christian, I knew the phrase well. “Follow Me” is an invitation from Jesus, a call to trust in Him and walk in His ways. The full verse from Matthew 4:19 later came to mind: *“Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” * It was a reminder of my faith, of the call to not only trust but to share His love with others.
My hope is that this painting, like His invitation, speaks to those who see it. May it serve as a gentle reminder that we are all called to follow Him, to walk in faith even when the path is not immediately clear. And in those quiet moments, by the stream or beneath the shelter of the oak trees, may we all hear His voice, feel His presence, and find peace in following where He leads.
